Problem

An accountant expects a settlement on a certain day, sees nothing in the bank, and raises an alarm when the cycle has simply met a weekend, holiday or cut-off time.

How It's Resolved

Count working days from the capture date after the cut-off rule, skip weekends and bank holidays, then compare with the dashboard's expected date before treating it as a delay or hold.

Configuration

The gateway's settlement cycle and cut-off time, the RBI holiday list for the relevant state, and a log of expected against actual settlement dates.

Output

Delays classified as normal timing, bank posting lag, account-detail issues or holds, with support tickets raised only for real problems and with full details.

Most settlement “delays” are a normal settlement cycle meeting a weekend, a bank holiday or the gateway’s daily cut-off time. The rest are usually holds for KYC, risk or disputes. Before assuming money is missing, check the expected settlement date in the gateway dashboard.

What are the usual causes?

Likely causeWhat happensHow to confirm
Weekend or bank holidayThe cycle counts working days onlyCount working days from the capture date
Payment after cut-off timeThe payment counts as next day’sCheck the capture time against the cut-off
Longer cycle than assumedYour plan is T+2 or T+3, not T+1Check your agreement or dashboard
Account-detail mismatchThe transfer is returned or not sentDashboard shows failed or returned
Risk, KYC or dispute holdThe gateway pauses the payoutDashboard shows on hold
Bank posting lagSent late in the day, posted next dayUTR exists; credit appears next working day

“T+2” means two working days after the transaction day (T). “KYC” means know-your-customer checks on your business and bank account.

How do I tell a normal delay from a real problem?

Work through three questions.

  1. Has the expected date passed? If not, it is not late. The dashboard usually shows the expected date per settlement.
  2. Is there a UTR? If the dashboard shows the settlement as processed with a UTR (unique transaction reference), the money has left the gateway. Search your bank statement for that UTR, including the next working day. If you still cannot find it, ask your bank.
  3. Is it on hold or failed? Then it is a real issue with the gateway. Read the reason and act on it.

RBI’s bank holiday list differs by state, so check the list for the state where your bank account is held.

Worked example: ₹36,400 of Friday sales

Your gateway settles on T+2 working days. On Friday 9 October you capture ₹36,400 of payments, all before the cut-off time. Monday 12 October is a bank holiday in your state (an assumption for this example).

DayWorking day?Count
Friday 9 OctoberYesT
Saturday 10 OctoberNo (weekend)
Sunday 11 OctoberNo (weekend)
Monday 12 OctoberNo (holiday)
Tuesday 13 OctoberYesT+1
Wednesday 14 OctoberYesT+2

The credit is due on Wednesday, not Tuesday. Nothing is late on Tuesday. At an illustrative combined fee and GST of 2.36 percent (₹859.04), you should expect about ₹35,540.96.

Check: 2.36 percent of ₹36,400 is ₹859.04, and ₹36,400 minus ₹859.04 is ₹35,540.96.

Whether Saturday counts as a working day depends on your gateway and bank; some count bank working Saturdays. Check your gateway’s settlement calendar.

What should I send the gateway’s support team so the query is closed fast?

A complete first message saves days of back and forth. Include:

  1. Your merchant ID and registered business name.
  2. The settlement ID, or the capture date range if there is no settlement ID yet.
  3. The expected amount and expected date.
  4. Your bank statement extract for the period, showing no matching credit.
  5. Any hold or failure reason shown in the dashboard.

Keep the ticket number with your month-end working papers.

Tracking expected against actual dates

A simple monthly log of expected and actual settlement dates shows patterns quickly: one gateway that is always a day late, or a holiday you keep forgetting. The weekend and holiday guide below goes deeper.

Frequently Asked Questions

My settlement cycle is T+2. Why has the money not arrived on day two?
T+2 usually means two working days, not two calendar days. A weekend or bank holiday in between pushes the credit out. Payments after the gateway's daily cut-off time also count from the next day.
What does T+1 or T+2 mean?
T is the day the payment was captured. T+1 means it settles one working day later, T+2 two working days later. Your gateway agreement or dashboard states your cycle.
How do I tell a normal delay from a real problem?
Check the expected settlement date in the dashboard. If that date has not passed, it is normal. If it has passed and the dashboard shows the settlement as processed with a UTR, ask your bank. If it shows on hold or failed, ask the gateway.
Do bank holidays differ by state?
Yes. RBI's holiday list varies by state, so a holiday in one state may delay credits to a bank branch there even when other states are working.
What should I send the gateway's support team?
Your merchant ID, the settlement ID or date range, the expected amount, the expected date, and a screenshot or extract of your bank statement for that period.
