What Does a UPI Narration in a Bank Statement Tell a Lender?

A UPI narration carries the mode, direction, a 12-digit reference, the counterparty name or UPI ID and a remark. Lenders read the counterparty and remark to tell customer payments from family transfers, wallets and loan-app flows.

Problem

A small business's bank statement is full of UPI credits, and the lender must tell customer receipts from family transfers, wallet loads and loan-app flows.

How It's Resolved

Break each UPI narration into mode, direction, reference, counterparty and remark, then classify by counterparty pattern: many varied payers suggest business, a few repeat round-amount payers suggest family support.

Configuration

A per-bank narration layout, a list of known family or related VPAs from the borrower, a P2P or P2M flag where available, and rules for repeat payers, round amounts and time of day.

Output

UPI credits split into business receipts and excluded personal transfers, with the reason recorded for each excluded payer.

A UPI narration in a bank statement usually carries five things: the mode (UPI), the direction (credit or debit), a 12-digit reference number, the counterparty name or UPI ID, and sometimes a remark the payer typed. Lenders read the counterparty and remark most closely, because they tell customer payments apart from family transfers, wallet loads and loan-app flows.

For a small business that collects most of its money by UPI, this one line is often the best evidence of who is really paying.

What are the parts of a UPI narration?

An illustrative UPI credit might look like this. Real layouts vary.

UPI/CR/412345678901/RAMESH KUMAR/rk1990@okbank/Payment for order

PartExampleWhat it tells the lender
ModeUPIReal-time UPI payment
DirectionCRMoney in
Reference (RRN)412345678901Unique 12-digit reference to trace the payment
CounterpartyRAMESH KUMARWho paid
UPI ID (VPA)rk1990@okbankThe payer’s virtual payment address
RemarkPayment for orderThe payer’s note, if any

How banks differ. Each bank arranges these parts in its own way. Some put the reference first, some put the name first. Some cut the name after a set number of characters. Some show the UPI ID, some do not. Some use slashes, others hyphens. Before reading a statement, take five UPI lines and work out where each part sits for that bank. The guide on why SBI, HDFC and ICICI statements look different covers this.

How does a lender tell a customer payment from a family transfer?

No single clue settles it. Analysts look at the pattern:

  1. Repeat payers. Customers vary. Family members send money again and again from the same UPI ID.
  2. Names. A payer with the same surname as the borrower is worth a second look.
  3. Round amounts. ₹10,000 or ₹25,000 every month looks like support. ₹1,240, ₹865 and ₹3,410 look like sales.
  4. Time of day. Shop sales cluster in trading hours. Family transfers often come at month start or late evening.
  5. P2P or P2M. Where a credit is tagged as person-to-merchant, the receiver is set up as a merchant, which supports business use.

Also watch the debit side. Small UPI repayments to several unfamiliar lending apps can point to borrowing that does not appear on the bureau report.

A worked example: 40 credits, three family payers

Pooja runs a tailoring shop and collects payments by UPI into her savings account. In August she has 40 UPI credits totalling ₹3,85,000.

GroupCreditsAmountTreatment
34 different payers, varied amounts34₹2,65,000Business receipts
Brother, same UPI ID, ₹20,000 twice2₹40,000Excluded
Father, same UPI ID, ₹25,000 twice2₹50,000Excluded
Husband, same UPI ID, ₹15,000 twice2₹30,000Excluded
Total40₹3,85,000

Family credits: ₹40,000 + ₹50,000 + ₹30,000 = ₹1,20,000. Business income counted: ₹3,85,000 − ₹1,20,000 = ₹2,65,000. Family money is about 31 percent of her credits.

Nothing here is wrong. Family support is normal. But it is not income the business earns, so it does not go into the income figure used for a loan.

Why a genuine small business can look personal

Many small businesses take payments on a personal UPI ID into a savings account, with no merchant tag. On account type alone they look like an individual. What gives the business away is the pattern: many payers, uneven amounts and trading-hour timing. At a few statements a month an analyst can read this by eye. At hundreds, it needs classification rules. See personal vs business transaction separation, narration pattern classification, and, for the bookkeeper’s view, decoding narration codes.

TransactIQ uses counterparty intelligence and behavioural patterns to split one statement into business and personal flows. See the bank statement analyzer or MSME lending.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is in a UPI narration?
Usually the mode (UPI), the direction (credit or debit), a 12-digit reference number, the other party's name or UPI ID, and sometimes a remark typed by the payer. The order and abbreviations vary by bank.
What is a VPA?
A virtual payment address, also called a UPI ID, such as name@bankhandle. It identifies the account that sent or received the money without showing the account number.
How does a lender tell a customer payment from a family transfer?
By looking at who paid, how often and how much. Many different payers with varied amounts look like customers. The same few relatives sending round amounts every month look like family support.
Is a P2M payment always business income?
A person-to-merchant tag shows the receiver is set up as a merchant, which supports business use. The lender still checks the payers and amounts before counting it.
Can a genuine small business look personal?
Yes. Many small shops collect payments on a personal UPI ID into a savings account. The analyst then relies on payer variety, amounts and timing rather than the account type.
