A deductor deposited TDS on a challan with the wrong tax type, tax year, section or TAN, and the return cannot use it.
The challan is corrected first, online by the deductor for permitted fields, otherwise through the Assessing Officer, and only then is the return corrected to link it. A wrong-head deposit under a PAN is usually recovered separately while the TDS is paid again.
Challan receipt (BSR code, date, serial number), TRACES login, details of the error, and a letter with supporting documents if the Assessing Officer route is needed.
A challan in the right TDS head, tax year and section, linked to the return, with vendor credit restored.
A TDS challan paid with the wrong tax type, year or section cannot be fixed by correcting the return alone. The challan itself must be corrected first: some fields online by you on TRACES, a few by the bank shortly after payment, and the rest by the Assessing Officer. Only then can the return use it.
A challan is the payment record for tax you deposited. TDS should go on the TDS challan (ITNS 281 type) under your TAN, the tax deduction account number.
What went wrong, and who can fix it?
| Error | Who typically corrects it | What to attach |
|---|---|---|
| Income tax challan (280 type) used instead of TDS (281 type) | Assessing Officer; often easier to pay again | Challan copy, letter explaining the error |
| Wrong minor head (for example, regular tax vs demand) | Deductor online on TRACES, if permitted | Challan details |
| Wrong assessment or tax year | Deductor online on TRACES, if not consumed | Challan details |
| Wrong section or nature of payment | Deductor online on TRACES, if permitted | Challan details |
| Wrong TAN | Assessing Officer | Challan copy, letter, proof of both TANs |
| Name or amount typed wrongly at the bank | Bank, within a short window after payment | Request to the bank branch |
Rules on which fields can be changed online, and for how long, change from time to time. Check the current TRACES help before you start.
Can I just fix it in the return?
Only if the challan is correct. If the challan was paid under the right TAN, head, year and section, and you just typed a wrong BSR code or serial number in the return, a correction statement fixes it.
If the challan itself is wrong, the return cannot link to it, and TRACES will show short payment.
What happens to vendor credits while the challan is wrong?
The deduction is reported but not backed by a usable challan. Your vendor’s credit can show as unmatched in their TDS credit statement (Form 26AS, or Form 168 from tax year 2026-27). You may get a demand for short payment. Interest at 1.5 percent per month under Section 201(1A) can run until the correct deposit is linked.
From 1 April 2026, under the Income-tax Act 2025, challans carry new section references under Section 393. A deposit made with an old Act section for a tax year 2026-27 deduction is a common new error. The section mapping article lists old and new references.
A worked example: ₹25,000 on the income tax challan
On 5 August you deposited ₹25,000 of July TDS using the income tax challan for your company’s PAN instead of the TDS challan for your TAN. Your Q2 return shows a ₹25,000 short payment.
- Recognise the cause: the ₹25,000 is credited as your own advance tax, not TDS.
- Option A: write to your Assessing Officer to have the challan moved to the TDS head. This can take weeks or months.
- Option B: pay ₹25,000 again on the TDS challan, now. If paid on 10 September, interest is 1.5 percent for 1 month (the July deduction was due by 7 August): ₹375.
- Link the new challan through a correction statement.
- Claim the first ₹25,000 as tax paid in your own company return.
Check: ₹25,000 times 1.5 percent equals ₹375. Option B costs ₹375 and blocks cash until your return, but clears vendor credits fast.
