Can I Cancel or Correct an E-Invoice After the IRN Is Generated?

An e-invoice cannot be edited after the IRN is generated. It can be cancelled in full within 24 hours if no active e-way bill sits against it. After that window, a credit note or debit note is the route.

Problem

A junior accountant spots an error on an e-invoice after the IRN is generated and does not know whether to cancel, edit or issue a note.

How It's Resolved

IRP cancellation is full, within 24 hours and only with no active e-way bill. Editing is not possible. After 24 hours, a credit note reverses the invoice and a new invoice is raised if needed.

Configuration

A same-day review of every new IRN, an e-way bill check before cancelling, and a register of cancellations and credit notes linked to the original IRN.

Output

Errors fixed by the right route, GSTR-1 and the buyer's GSTR-2B correct, and every cancellation or note traceable to its IRN.

You cannot edit an e-invoice once the IRN is generated. You can cancel it in full within 24 hours, and only if no e-way bill is active against it. After 24 hours, you fix the mistake with a credit note (to reduce or reverse) or a debit note (to increase), not by changing the original.

That 24-hour window is why a same-day check of new e-invoices saves so much trouble.

Which route fits which error?

ErrorFound within 24 hoursFound after 24 hours
Wrong buyer GSTINCancel IRN, reissue to the right GSTINCredit note for the full value, new invoice to the right GSTIN

Value too lowCancel and reissueDebit note for the shortfall
Wrong item or HSNCancel and reissueCredit note and new invoice

Two practical rules:

  1. If an e-way bill was generated, cancel the e-way bill first. The IRP will not cancel an IRN with an active e-way bill.
  2. The reissued invoice needs a new number. The IRP will not give a second IRN to the same document number, and your invoice series should show the old one as cancelled.

What happens to GSTR-1 and the buyer’s ITC when an IRN is cancelled?

E-invoice data flows from the IRP into your GSTR-1. A cancelled IRN is removed from that flow, so the invoice never reaches the buyer’s GSTR-2B and the buyer gets no input tax credit on it. If you had already filed GSTR-1 with the invoice in it, you correct the return through the credit note route instead.

Can I edit an e-invoice after the IRN is generated?

No editing is possible on the IRP. Changing figures in your own books without a cancellation or a note leaves your ledger, your GSTR-1 and the IRP record telling three different stories. That mismatch is exactly what a buyer or an auditor will find.

Worked example: wrong buyer GSTIN

An electrical supplier in Ahmedabad raises invoice INV/26/0377 for ₹1,50,000 plus GST at 18 percent (₹27,000), a total of ₹1,77,000, at 4 pm on 8 October. The IRN is generated, but the buyer’s GSTIN belongs to a sister company.

Case A: found next morning at 10 am (18 hours later). No e-way bill has been generated yet. The accountant cancels the IRN, notes 0377 as cancelled and issues INV/26/0378 for ₹1,77,000 to the right GSTIN. GSTR-1 for October shows only 0378.

Case B: found on day three. Cancellation is no longer possible. The accountant issues a credit note for ₹1,77,000 against 0377 to the wrong GSTIN, which also needs an IRN, and a new invoice 0391 for ₹1,77,000 to the correct GSTIN.

RecordCase ACase B
Documents issued0377 cancelled, 0378 issued0377, credit note, 0391
Net taxable value₹1,50,000₹1,50,000 − ₹1,50,000 + ₹1,50,000 = ₹1,50,000
Net GST₹27,000₹27,000

Both cases end at the same tax, but Case B creates three documents and a credit note that the wrong buyer must also accept.

Key rules to remember

  • E-invoicing applies above ₹5 crore of aggregate turnover (since 1 August 2023); at ₹10 crore or more, each document must reach the IRP within 30 days (since 1 April 2025).
  • Credit notes are issued under Section 34 of the CGST Act and must be declared by 30 November following the financial year, or the annual return date if earlier.
  • Rule 46 governs the replacement invoice’s particulars, including the 16-character number limit.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long do I have to cancel an e-invoice?
24 hours from IRN generation, on the IRP or through your billing software. After that the IRP will not cancel it.
Can I cancel only one line of an e-invoice?
No. Cancellation is for the whole invoice. A partial correction needs a credit note or debit note.
Why does the IRP refuse my cancellation?
Usually because the 24 hours have passed or because an e-way bill generated against the IRN is still active. Cancel the e-way bill first.
Can I reuse the invoice number after cancelling the IRN?
No. The IRP will not issue a new IRN for the same document number. Reissue under the next number in your series.
What happens to the buyer's ITC when an IRN is cancelled?
The cancelled invoice drops out of your GSTR-1, so it does not reach the buyer's GSTR-2B and no ITC is available on it.
